Regular Board Meeting May 12, 2010 - Windsor High School Library


Call to Order

 President, Matt Greuel called the meeting to order at 6:28 P.M.


Roll Call

The following members were present: Matt Greuel, Vince Welsh, Rob Bullock, Geo Glasscock and Wanda Kearney. District Administrators Sharon Keck, Erik Van Hoveln and Cynthia Bankson were also in attendance.  Kurt Stremming and Terrie Hudson were absent.


Consent Agenda

A motion to approve the consent agenda was made by Geo Glasscock and seconded by Vince Welsh. Member’s votes were, Matt Greuel – yes, Vince Welsh – yes, Rob Bullock – yes, Geo Glasscock – yes, Wanda Kearney - yes. MOTION CARRIED 5 – yes, 0 – no.


Correspondence & Visitors

Thank you cards were read from Joyce Bell, Bev Peadro, Linda Bennett, and Terry Prasun for the meal provided to them for Teacher Appreciation Week.

A thank you card from Sharon Keck was read for the plant she received after her surgery.


Old Business


Vince Welsh reported he and the Ag students could remove the old playground equipment at the Grade School.  Mr. Van Hoveln will help coordinate.


New Business

Travis Bushue presented insurance bids with 2 options.  After some discussion Rob Bullock motioned to accept the first option.  Matt Greuel seconded the motion. VOICE VOTE CARRIED.


IHSA Bass Fishing – Travis Bushue also informed the board of insurance needs and liabilities if the board elected to take part in the IHSA Bass fishing.  The board discussed the pros and cons of electing to participate with it to be discussed further at the June board meeting when more information is available.


Handbook Changes – Mrs. Bankson presented the Elementary School handbook changes and 2 additions were made.  Mr. Van Hoveln presented the Jr/Sr. High School handbook changes.  Geo Glasscock made the motion to approve the handbooks changes proposed by both Principals with the 2 additional changes at the Elementary.  Vince Welsh seconded the motion.  VOICE VOTE CARRIED.


Mrs. Keck inquired about board participation in the Board Convention next November.


Terry Prasun requested the use of the Activity Bus for a trip to Bloomington for a State Special Olympics event in June.  Since this is not a school sponsored event, the board has asked for further clarification.


Mrs. Keck informed the board about a possible $50,000.00 matching maintenance grant being offered by the State of Illinois.  She asked for guidance on applying should this come about.  Some possibilities to use the grant money would be for parking lots, tiles on floor at the Grade School, lockers at the High School, boiler at the High School.  The concensus was to apply if it becomes available for necessary maintenance projects.


Voluntary Student insurance for the 2010-2011 school year.  United Health Care through Gerlock will be used again.


Executive Session

At 8:00 PM Geo Glasscock motioned to go into executive session to discuss hiring of staff, staff resignations and negotiations.  Matt Greuel seconded the motion.  Member’s votes were:  Vince Welsh – no, Rob Bullock – yes, Geo Glasscock – yes, Wanda Kearney – yes, and Matt Greuel - yes. MOTION CARRIED 4 – yes, 1 – no.


Rob Bullock motioned to exit executive session at 9:07 PM.  Geo Glasscock made the second.  VOICE VOTE CARRIED.


Possible Board Action

Mr. Van Hoveln recommended hiring Seth Mummel for summer help at the High School.  Rob Bullock made the motion to hire Seth Mummel.  Geo Glasscock seconded the motion.  Member’s votes were:  Rob Bullock – yes, Geo Glasscock – yes, Wanda Kearney – yes, Matt Greuel – yes, Vince Welsh - yes. MOTION CARRIED 5 – yes, 0 – no.


Mr. Van Hoveln recommended hiring Lindsay Smith as the Social Worker for the 2010-2011 school year.  Rob Bullock made the motion to hire Lindsay Smith and Wanda Kearney made the second.  Member’s votes were:  Geo Glasscock – yes, Wanda Kearney – yes, Matt Greuel – yes, Vince Welsh – yes, Rob Bullock - yes. MOTION CARRIED 5 – yes, 0 – no.


Geo Glasscock made the motion to accept letters of resignations from JoAnn Brandenburg, teaching and coaching; Barbie Smith, Bus Driver; Misty Williamson, One-on-One Aide; Chris Bullock, JV Basketball Coach; Chelsea Hess, Jr High Cheerleading Coach.  Matt Greuel seconded the motion.  VOICE VOTE CARRIED.



Principal’s Report

Mr. Van Hoveln reported:

  • Congratulations to Katie Van Tassel for being selected as student of the month. 
  • Congratulations to the junior high team quest team for earning 4th place at the state competition. 
  • Congratulations to the 2009-2010 Cheerleading team for making the IHSA all academic team with a 3.66 GPA. 
  • Congratulations to Nancy Fontaine for being selected for the Education is the Key Award.
  • Lori Bennett is requesting use of the gym to hold an individual volleyball camp sometime in June. 
  • Volunteers to hand out diplomas at the graduation ceremonies
  • I had six boys come to me about the possibility of the school adding bass fishing to our list of IHSA activities.  Landon Hayward said his family would supply the boat.  I have attached a question and answer sheet from the IHSA web page that will explain things and give you a chance to ponder this before the meeting.

Sp. Olympic Gold Medal Winners: Noah Smith & Adam Hendershot – they will be going to the state games in June.

Sixth grade class – won 1st place in Tug-of-War contest at Dare Picnic, beating 14 area schools – they brought home a trophy to add to the trophy case.

Tristan Warner – took 1st place in the softball throw at the Dare Picnic, throwing a distance of 162 ft.

Mrs. Rincker’s and Miss Dixon’s classes were selected the 2010 winner of the Farm Tour Poster Contest – they will receive a free pizza party.

Mrs. Keck reported on Monday’s evacuation of the Grade School and the need for purchasing a new oven this summer.
